Job Title: Library Monitor

Department: Library

FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-exempt

Bard College’s Stevenson Library is seeking a part time evening/weekend monitor to join our public services team. This position helps resolve patron and facilities issues, support the student staff at the service desks, and is critical to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment in the library at times when other staff isn’t present.

We are looking for candidates with organization, initiative, and attention to detail, who share our commitment to making the library a welcoming and safe space for students, and are comfortable in a role of (limited) authority.

Job Duties

  • Supervising the two service desks and resolving schedule issues that come up during the shift
  • Helping answer basic patron questions about using the library as well as printers, scanners, and other technology, and referring patrons to appropriate library or college staff as needed
  • Monitoring the building and addressing any safety and facilities concerns
  • Resolving scheduling issues that come up during the shift
  • Communicating regularly with library’s public services staff and attending occasional public services team meetings
  • Other projects and duties may be assigned based on library needs and the incumbent’s skills and interests

Qualifications

  • Comfort with basic technology, such as printers, scanners, and basic internet navigation
  • Experience in customer service or other public-facing roles
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Availability to work every Friday and Saturday evening and late weeknight shifts as needed (12-24 hours per week)
  • Previous experience working in a library is preferred
  • Some supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience working or studying in a college environment is preferred

Compensation: $20-$21/hour
This salary range reflects the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
