Job Description:
The Director of the Library reports to the Associate Dean for Instruction & Learning for the Learning Commons, and is directly responsible for the administration of library services and supervision of library staff. The Director provides leadership, supervision and strategic direction in the development and maintenance of resources, programming, collections, and archives to support teaching and learning both on campus and through remote learning.
The duties and responsibilities of the position include:
- Provide vision and dynamic leadership for innovative library services that enhance and support curriculum, instruction, and student success.
- Effectively direct library operations including the supervision of all library staff, and general maintenance and proper use of library facilities.
- Consult with faculty, administrators, staff members and students regarding library offerings and policies, in support of all academic programs and departments.
- Determine, in consultation with the library staff and the Associate Dean for Instruction & Learning, procedures and regulations for the use of library materials and spaces.
- Actively participate in shared governance through membership in the Professional Staff Organization and the Administrative Staff Council.
- Hire and train new library employees.
- Conduct annual staff performance evaluations to ensure continuous improvement and identify potential opportunities for growth. Support the development and growth of employees, with a focus on emerging technologies and techniques in libraries and academic support offices.
- Manage the schedule of work activities of all members of the Library staff and facilitate staff meetings.
- Prepare and manage the library budget and supervise the expenditure of library funds.
- Oversee library collection development and coordinate the acquisition of academic content, both physical and digital.
- Promote faculty involvement with the Library and the Learning Commons.
- Collaborate with Information Technology to provide the library with appropriate computer technology, connectivity, and capacity to meet the needs of students and faculty.
- Collaborate with Learning Commons directors and coordinators to provide innovative resources and programming that promote student success.
- Plan and implement effective information literacy programming for both students and faculty. Ensure that information literacy offerings support diverse learners.
- Develop and update library objectives, measurable goals, and activities as part of the College’s Strategic Plan. Submit an annual report of library activities and supervise effective maintenance of data, records, and statistics on all aspects of the library operations.
- Participate in department, division, and institutional assessment activities.
- Engage in data driven decision making.
- Act as DCC’s SUNY OER Co-Lead and coordinate/promote OER activities on campus in consultation with the Teaching and Learning Center and the Office of Instruction & Learning. Provide OER assistance to faculty as courses are developed on campus.
- Represent the library at local, regional, state and national conferences or other activities.
- Serve on the Curriculum Committee and other cross-campus committees related to the work of the library and the Learning Commons.
- Provide timely and accurate data reports to the College, the state, and federal agencies (for example, IPEDS).
- Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean for Instruction & Learning.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, accredited by the American Library Association
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library with at least two years in a supervisory, administrative capacity
- Ability to work with a diverse population in a supportive and professional manner
- Knowledge of current and emerging concepts, principles, technology, and practices needed to successfully operate an academic library for a community college
- Leadership skills, including problem-solving, efficient decision making, and effective oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Alma and Primo VE, an Ex Libris Library Services Platform
- Experience with Open Educational Resources (OER)
- Experience working with a Learning Commons
Additional Information:
Academic support positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Dutchess Community College and Dutchess United Educators (DUE).
Salary Range: $82,064 – $93,278 (Group 3)
