Immediate Opening: Assistant Director (full time)
The Brewster Public Library has an immediate opening for the position of Assistant Director. Strong candidates for this position will have extensive experience with the Mid-Hudson Library System’s Sierra software, high attention to detail, a friendly disposition, and an excellent work ethic. Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Overseeing the daily operations of the library in the Director’s absence
  • Managing the daily activities of the circulation desk, maintaining a welcome environment for patrons
  • Supervising professional and other library personnel
  • Overseeing ordering and processing of new library materials and office supplies
  • Processing inter-library loan requests
  • Training new employees
  • Assisting with updating policies
  • Providing routine reference services
  • Performing in-depth searches
  • Monitoring daily intake of funds/preparing bank deposits

This is a Civil Service position; permanent appointment dependent on completion of Assistant Library Director examination.

Required knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics: Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science; good knowledge of the applications of computer technology to library operations; good knowledge of modern library organizations, procedures, policies, aims and services; working knowledge of library administration practices; good oral communication skills with both individuals and groups; ability to carry out library policies; ability to train and supervise library staff; ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of others; ability to express ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to read, comprehend and conduct research studies; ability to comprehend users’ needs quickly and accurately; ability to exercise leadership and motivate others; ability to establish effective working relationships with community organizations; tact and courtesy in dealing with staff and public.

Minimum qualifications, either:
Master’s degree in library science from a college or university program either American Library Association-accredited, or otherwise meeting requirements of NYCRR Title 8, §90.7 in qualifying graduates for New York State librarian certification, and three (3) years post graduate professional library experience in a library of recognized standing; or
An equivalent combination of education and experience as indicated above.

Must be dependable and self-motivated; Spanish speaking a plus. Starting salary $55,000-$60,000, plus health benefits and voluntary enrollment in NYS retirement system. Applicants should send a letter of interest and resume to Gina Loprinzo at director@brewsterlibrary.org.
