About the “Turning the Page for Pollinators” Project at Southeastern
In 2025, Southeastern received a grant from Partners for Climate Action to transform our landscape into a haven for pollinators. “Turning the Page for Pollinators” will write a new chapter for Southeastern’s headquarters in Ulster County, reclaiming the council’s landscape to provide a net positive impact to our local ecosystem.
Building on the council’s prior efforts to install more pollinator-friendly plants, the project objectives are to:
- Remediate and sustain the soil food web;
- Install site-appropriate native plants to support pollinator life cycles year-round;
- Reduce reliance on gas-powered lawn equipment;
- Engage in pollinator-supporting maintenance practices; and,
- Demonstrate for Southeastern members and the public how to actively steward commercial land to support pollinators.
Some of our project activities include:
- Removing invasive shrubs and decades of landscape fabric and degraded topsoil;
- Installing a mix of pollinator-friendly plants;
- Converting 1,200 square feet of lawn into a wildflower meadow; and,
- Engaging in education and outreach with Southeastern members and the public through presentations, programs, and digital resources.
The project has a website — here! — with an active photo blog documenting our progress. You’ll find resources for getting started on land remediation and planting pollinator habitats at your institution. In May – June 2026, we will have planting events (volunteers needed!), and Jan – April, we will make presentations at local libraries to talk about this project.
Bee in touch if your library would like a visit! Project contacts: sarah@senylrc.org / moshe@senylrc.org.
