Libraries can make systematic changes in their culture, collections, or programs by developing strategies to assess Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and subsequent planning for a path forward.

In partnership with Dr. Kawanna Bright, Southeastern offers a program to assist member libraries through this process. The program includes two workshops in February 2023, followed by the opportunity to have individual consulting time with Dr. Bright. The purpose of these consulting hours is to receive assistance from the expert instructor following the workshops, which can help you with your library’s EDI assessment and planning.

Dr. Kawanna Bright taught two workshops for Southeastern members in February 2023. See below for recordings of the workshops

Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) Concepts & Cultural Competency: The Integration of EDI practices into Library Work, 2/13/23

This workshop will give participants a foundation for understanding EDI in libraries, relevant definitions, and related concepts, as well as time to reflect on these ideas. You will learn about cultural awareness, the cultural competence continuum, and how this is applied to libraries.
(Recording and slides will be posted here as soon as they are available.)

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) assessments offer library and information organizations a strategic method for assessing their EDI efforts. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to tools that can be used to evaluate EDI at their library and determine a plan for an assessment process. The goal of this workshop is for attendees to understand the process, tools, and steps necessary to conduct EDI assessments and for future EDI planning.

About Dr. Kawanna Bright:
Dr. Kawanna Bright is an Assistant Professor of Library Science at East Carolina
University. Dr. Bright earned her Ph.D. in Research Methods and Statistics from the University of Denver in 2018. Dr. Bright’s current research focuses on assessment in libraries; equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in libraries; the application of research methodology to the study of library and information science; and the importance of the liaison librarianship role in academic libraries. She is diligently continuing to develop a standardized EDI assessment tool for academic libraries in the hopes of moving the assessment of EDI away from simply counting “diverse” employees.
