This webinar will provide basic training on all aspects of the SEAL resource sharing system, managed by the Southeastern New York Library Resources Council. SEAL connects libraries in the Southeastern region—encompassing Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster counties—and allows them to easily share books, DVD’s, and other resources. Topics covered in the training include:

  • Creating and managing a SEAL Account
  • Simple and advanced searching in the SEAL catalog
  • Placing and managing ILL requests
  • Lending items through SEAL
  • Generating ILL statistics
  • Using the SEAL directory to look up information about other participating libraries
  • An overview of the regional codes & procedures regulating SEAL usage
  • Additional resources for inter-library loan (such as MISP, the Medical Information Services Program)

Have you ever wondered how the SEAL catalog works? This upcoming webinar will provide a deep dive into the catalog, addressing everything you ever wanted to know (and more!). Topics covered include:

  • How the catalog works (a brief look at the search protocol Z39.50)
  • How the catalog compiles and sorts records
  • Methods for simple and advanced searching (this will cover searching with Boolean operators, browsing for foreign language titles, and much more!)
  • Trouble-shooting common issues
  • The SEAL catalog as both a regional discovery tool and ILL platform
