The Twila Snead Award for Excellence was established in 2014 to celebrate Southeastern members who express leadership in the field of librarianship, create innovative services, develop programs that enhance the lives of those in underserved communities, provide unique services, and/or improve physical facilities. It is named in honor of a woman who embodied those qualities during twenty years of service at St Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Library.
The 2018 award recipient is adLIB, a program series and outreach framework at Vassar College Library. adLIB’s mission is to develop a program series that responds to and addresses the needs of students in the Transitions programs, who are comprised of first-generation, undocumented, and/or low income students at Vassar College.
According to Vassar College Library Director Andy Ashton, “adLIB grew out of a desire to collaborate more closely with students in developing programming that addressed their needs. It has tackled topics ranging from how to read handwritten manuscripts, to privacy in library research, to issues of race and bias. The program has thrived because it leverages the unique skills and talents of a wide variety of library staff, students, faculty, and administrators.”
