Continuing Education Programs:
Spring & Summer 2004 at SENYLRC
Four programs are scheduled for the spring and summer 2004 that we hope will be of interest to library staff in the region. The Continuing Education Committee at SENYLRC, chaired by John Barrie, Dominican College, selected the following topics to be covered in programs in 2004. On May 27, 2004, Robert Lackie, Rider University, will teach a full-day program on Our Ever-changing Role: Preparing for Instruction in the E-Classroom. Robert Lackie has taught programs for SENYLRC for the last two years. Someone who attended last year’s program on the Invisible Web said that Robert Lackie “is dynamic (like an invisible website but very visible!), fun, knowledgeable, down to earth, etc. He is a secret phenomenon that should be advertised strongly.” This workshop on the E-Classroom is about teaching students or patrons in a computer lab or electronic classroom. Robert will cover many aspects of this new environment such as classroom structure issues, session planning, teaching methodology and creative problem-solving. Participants in this program will leave with information on characteristics of E-Classrooms and how to plan and prepare for a variety of teaching or training sessions and issues in this setting. The E*Classroom Workshop is on Thursday, May 27, 2004, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., at SENYLRC.

In June, Denise O'Shea, the Technology Programs Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region, will teach Super Searcher/Searching the Web. This hands-on course focuses on the advanced features of web search engines, and on how to evaluate web search sites and search results. Participants will use various search tools, compare the features and utility of each, and develop search strategies that will increase the precision and scope of their searching. Discussions, exercises and short presentations are all part of this four hour class. Upon successful completion of this class, each participant will be able to perform searches that quickly and efficiently identify useful web sites and information resources. The Super Searcher class is on Thursday, June 10, 2004, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. at SENYLRC. |
In July SENYLRC is sponsoring a program on grant research and writing. Esther Kando Odescalchi, formerly of IBM and a librarian, is teaching a two-part program in July. This is a hands-on program designed for anyone who is ready to apply for a grant. Esther will teach us the art of writing a proposal that is required by most funding sources. She teaches a similar course for Dutchess Community college and a participant in one of there classes had this to say about the program: "Excellent workshop! Practical, interesting, quick paced and informative. Prof. EKO is very enthusiastic and helpful!" The Grant Research & Writing Workshop is on July 12 and July 19, 2004, 9 am – 4:30 pm at SENYLRC.
In August SENYLRC is sponsoring a program called Weeding: A Positive, Proactive Collection Development Tool at the Mid-Hudson Library System Auditorium in Poughkeepsie. This program will cover the basic principles of weeding, including a variety of approaches, both scientific and intuitive. The class will review the common barriers to weeding and practical approaches to successful collection management. Beyond common principles, there are also issues unique to school, public, or academic libraries that will be addressed in small group discussion sessions. The trainer for this class is Marianne Kotch, a consultant and trainer to the Vermont public libraries. She has taught collection development and developed “A Bare Bones Collection for Small Vermont Public Libraries,” part of which was published in The Unabashed Librarian and served as a basis for Collection Development in the Small Library (ALA, 1991). The weeding workshop is on August 30, 2004, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Mid-Hudson Library System Auditorium in Poughkeepsie.
