The Program

The Southeastern New York Library Resources Council is pleased to offer all libraries in the region the option to subscribe to FirstSearch Base Package with Wilson Full Text at a greatly reduced cost. The Electronic Resources Advisory Committee (ERAC) selected this database to subsidize with RBDB funds.

Every attempt was made to keep the cost share for each library at a reasonable amount. The RBDB subsidy pays for part of the cost for FirstSearch, and the library pays for the remainder.

IP Recognition

OCLC just announced that IP Address Recognition can now be controlled by librarians in the FirstSearch Administrative Module: http://firstsearch.oclc.org/admin/.

Libraries may now control the IP addresses from which they provide access to FirstSearch using a new feature in their FirstSearch administrative modules. Through the administrative module, library staff may initiate IP address recognition access to FirstSearch, add or delete IP addresses and add or delete FirstSearch authorizations which are accessed from specific IP addresses. IP address changes entered through the administrative module are available as soon as the changes are saved.

Documentation about implementing IP address recognition access to FirstSearch is available now in the administrative module online help. The OCLC FirstSearch Administrative Module Reference Guide (http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/documentation/adminref/) and IP Address Recognition Access to FirstSearch: Getting Started (http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/firstsearch/getting_started/ipweb/) will be revised within the week to include helpful advice about gathering the information that libraries need to enter in the administrative module.

Is access unlimited?
Access to the FirstSearch Base Package with Wilson Full Text by the region's libraries is not unlimited but rather through a shared port, or simultaneous user, arrangement with two other 3R Councils. Traffic on these ports is monitored. There are 15 ports available.
Training

The databases are relatively easy to use and search; however, if Southeastern determines that training is an issue, Southeastern staff will work with OCLC to provide training opportunities in the region. Also, check the Southeastern CE Page to see if FirstSearch training is available.
