Day One: Introduction to Audio Preservation
Faculty: George Blood, President, Safe Sound Archive
An overview of the basics of audio preservation including the different types of analog audio recordings, how to assess the condition of your collection and environmental risks. The proper handling, storage, cleaning, packaging and playback equipment maintenance for audio recordings will be discussed. Guidelines and best practices for digital preservation will be reviewed. Participants are encouraged to bring sample audio recording for demonstration assessment of condition and quality.
Day Two: The Nuts and Bolts of Digitizing your Oral History Collection Faculty: Eileen McAdam, Director, The Sound & Story Project
Brett Barry, Silver Hollow Audio
This is a hands-on workshop where participants will assemble an analog to digital workstation and convert audio cassette recordings. Participants will learn basic audio editing and how to produce an archival set. Participants are encouraged to bring an audio cassette interview from their oral history collection.
Day Three: Designing an Oral History Digitization Plan
Faculty: Eileen McAdam, Director, The Sound & Story Project
The process of designing a small scale plan for converting analog recordings to digital formats will be discussed, including basic copyright and intellectual property issues and their impact on a digitization plan, developing a selection policy, managing workflow and options for providing access to collections. Contracting for reformatting and funding opportunities will also be reviewed.
NOTE: Participant space is limited. You may plan to attend either three-day session. Each day is a separate curriculum. You may send different individuals from your library, museum or historical society to different days, if more convenient– but please plan to attend all three workshop days to maximize your training.

$ 75/pp for three-day training, each, for 2 or more individuals from
a GHHN or SENYLRC member organization
