The New York 3Rs Association has launched a new digital heritage web site, www.newyorkheritage.org. The site connects more than 160 digital collections from around the state, contributed by libraries, archives, museums and other cultural institutions, and builds on existing digital repository services administered by each of the nine reference and research library resources councils.

NewYorkHeritage.org uses OCLC’s CONTENTdm Multisite Server to bring these collections together, allowing the public to search across all items simultaneously. This project provides free, online access to images of cultural and historical significance in New York State.

A variety of materials can be found among the New York Heritage Digital Collections, including photographs, postcards, correspondence, manuscripts, oral histories, yearbooks and newspapers. Many kinds of institutions from New York State have partnered to make this project possible,  including public, academic and school libraries, museums, archives and historical societies.  The power of collaboration is what makes this new service possible.

Participants to New York Heritage Digital Collections are committed to enhancing the site by adding both content and contributing institutions on a regular basis. The  goal of the project is to eventually connect one thousand collections and one million items from throughout  New York State.  All institutions interested in participating in the project are encouraged to contact the 3Rs organization that serves their region.

The New York 3Rs Association is a partnership among New York’s nine reference and research resource systems. The New York 3Rs was incorporated in 2003 to further the ability of those systems to provide statewide services. The members of the New York 3Rs Association are: the Capital District Library Council,  Central New York Library Resources Council, Long Island Library Resources Council, Metropolitan New York Library Council,  Northern New York Library Network,  Rochester Regional Library Council,  Southeastern New York Library Resources Council,  South Central Regional Library Council, and  Western New York Library Resources Council.

Maria Vee Kwon has joined Nyack Hospital as Director of Library and CME Services. She brings her background in corporate and pharmaceutical libraries and while new to the hospital field, has many year of MLA contributions and involvement. Welcome!

Sue Ben-Dor, Medical Librarian at Orange Regional Medical Center, has been notifiied of her recognition as a Distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professions ( AHIP). Congratulations! Sue continues to serve the profession through her participation in MLA nationally and in the Upper New York and Ontario Chapter (UNYOC) She is actively encouraging her medical librarian colleagues to get involved with Web 2.0 technology and serving as chapter liaison for AHIP credentialling.

An exhibit documenting the history of education in New Paltz is on display at the Sojourner Truth Library on the campus of SUNY New Paltz. The exhibit is called Education in a Valley Fair and is a collaborative effort of three New Paltz institutions: Historic Huguenot Street, Sojourner Truth Library at SUNY New Paltz and Haviland-Heidgerd Historic Collection/Elting Memorial Library. All three organizations provided materials from their collections to create this wonderful exhibit.

The Sojourner Truth Library along with two additional departments at SUNY New Paltz are sponsoring a conference on Intellectual Property & Copyright in the Academy on Friday, October 24th on the SUNY New Paltz Campus.  The conference is from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. They have some nationally known people in the copyright field speaking, including Kenneth Crews and Michael Carroll.  And the great thing is that this event is free!

Hudson River Valley Heritage has a collection of historical atlases that cover several counties in the region, plus one atlas for New York to Troy. Several libraries loaned us their physical items for digitization. The majority of the imaging was outsourced. Our summer intern, Adrienne, spent a considerable amount of time creating metadata for maps from three 19th century atlases from Rockland, Sullivan, and Greene Counties. She also created metadata for maps from the 1891 Atlas of the Hudson River Valley from New York City to Troy. All of these maps can be browsed or searched through Hudson River Valley Heritage www.hrvh.org/exhibit/atlas.htm.

Congratulations to Judy Fischetti, SENYLRC’s Member Services Librarian, who today, Friday, October 3, was notified that she received a 2008 NYLA Dewey Fellowship to attend the New York Library Association Conference in Saratoga Springs in November. The Fellowship is a $1250 stipend to attend the conference. Judy was nominated by the Academic and Special Library Section (ASLS) of NYLA for her fine efforts in co-editing the newsletter of ASLS.

Attention academic librarians: Mark your calendar for Thursday, May 7, 2009.    On that day, SENYLRC will be sponsoring an all day workshop titled “Information Commons 2.0-Lessons Learned and Moving Forward.” Currently in the planning stages,  we have secured Dr. D. Russell Bailey, Director of the Phillips Memorial Library at Providence College as our keynote speaker. Dr. Bailey is one of the foremost experts in the Information Commons (Learning Commons) environment and has authored several books and articles on the subject. We also are in the process of identifying potential workshop presenters from academic libraries which have implemented an information Commons and who can share with the audience the results of several years of experience with this concept.

The conference will be held at the Wallace Center on the grounds of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Home and Museum. Conference planners include Chui-chun Lee and Susan Kraat from SUNY New Paltz, Kari Mack from Ulster County Community College, and SENYLRC staff John Shaloiko and Judy Fischetti.
