New Electronic Resources Subsidized with SENYLRC's Regional Automation Funds
Southeastern’s Electronic Resources Advisory Committee (ERAC) selected
two new electronic resources to subsidize using regional automation funds. One
of the new offerings is three of the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) encyclopedias.
These encyclopedias are available to all of the libraries in the Southeastern
region (except for-profit institutions). We made it very simple for libraries
to receive these titles because they are listed along with the GVRL available
to libraries from NOVEL and there is no charge. The three encyclopedias are:
 |
- Encyclopedia of World Biography 2 ed., 23v, 1998
& Encyclopedia of World Biography Vol. 24, 2 ed.,
2005
- U*X*L Encyclopedia of Science 2nd ed., 10v, 2002
Edition 2
- Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations 11th ed., 6v,
2004 Edition 11
|
Since these titles are listed along with the GVRL titles from NOVEL you do
not have to do anything to set up the access for your library users unless you
want to set up direct URL’s or include MARC records into your online catalog.
The direct URL’s for the three encyclopedias are listed on the SENYLRC
web site: http://www.senylrc.org/services/electronicresources/gvrl.htm.
Please contact Tessa at SENYLRC if you would like the MARC record files.
The other new resource is the History E-Book Project from the American Council
of Learned Societies, which is available to academic libraries in the region
only.

The History E-Book Project is a collection of over 1,000 high
quality books in the field of history. The American Council of Learned Societies
(ACLS) received a $3-million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to sponsor
this project. These are works of major importance to historical studies, books
that remain vital to both scholars and advanced students, and are frequently
cited in the literature. The project is expanding its fields of coverage and
adding 250 titles a year.
The ACLS History E-Book Project works with both university presses and other
publishers of scholarly and academic books to build the title list for the History
E-Book Project. A select group of University Presses include:
Columbia University Press
Harvard University Press
Johns Hopkins University Press
The MIT Press
New York University Press |
Oxford University Press
Rutgers University Press
University of California Press
University of Michigan Press
University of North Carolina Press |
SENYLRC is charging a $20 administrative fee to use the History E-Book Project
for one year, August1, 2005 through July 31 2006. Without this subsidy the cost
would be $338 to $1,932, depending on the libraries Carnegie classification.
ERAC makes their decisions on an annual basis and The History-E-Book Project
will be considered for a subsidy again in 2006/07 but it’s eligibility
for a subsidy will depend upon usage and how much libraries like project this
year.
