SENYLRC’s Consortium Electronic Resources: OVERVIEW of Sources

Southeastern continues to work with library organizations in New York State in order to provide most affordable access to commercial databases for libraries in the region. SENYLRC collaborates with other library organizations, like WALDO, with other 3Rs councils and Nylink to aggregate and leverage the statewide licensing of these databases that result in volume discounts for your libraries. The list below is an overview of the organizations that Southeastern works with and the resources that are available from each project. Renewal forms and information for new subscribers are being developed and will be sent to all libraries in the region within the next few weeks.

Southeastern RBDB Database Subsidy
The Southeastern New York Library Resources Council offers libraries in the region the option to subscribe to electronic resources with a minimum cost share from the library. The Electronic Resources Advisory Committee (ERAC), chaired by Mary Ann Van Benschoten, Orange County Community College, recommended three resources to offer libraries at considerably reduced costs through this regional automation subsidy initiative, with the use of Regional Automation Funds (RBDB).

Every attempt was made to keep the cost share for each library at a minimum amount. For each electronic resource listed below, the regional automation subsidy pays part of the cost for the database, and the library pays for the remainder.

Databases Subsidized by RBDB

ABC Clio Logo

ABC-CLIO History Databases: America: History & Life and Historical Abstracts (Academic Libraries only): These two abstract and index resources are offered as one package. New features of this package include links from the citations to content purchases separately like Project Muse or JSTOR. The cost for this package varies by college. Each library is saving several thousand dollars through this consortia license and subsidy. The subscription year is August 1st, 2004 to July 31st, 2005.

FirstSearch Logo

FirstSearch Base Package with Wilson Full Text: This package includes twelve databases, the two most popular are WorldCat, the online union catalog and H.W. Wilson Select Plus with Full Text, which contains over 1600 full text titles. Citations in other FirstSearch databases, like Medline or ERIC link to the full text content in Wilson Select Plus. The cost for the FirstSearch Package is $350 for public, school, hospital and special libraries; $525 for academic libraries. The subscription year is July 1st, 2004 to June 30th, 2005. (Without the SENYLRC license, the individual institution list price to add Wilson SelectPlus to the FirstSearch Base Package is based upon FTE or population served. For example, unlimited use subscription prices begin at $2,850 for a 4-year college with 500 FTE and at $6,050 for community colleges and public libraries. Unlimited use, individual institution subscription prices for Wilson SelectPlus only, without the Base Package, begin at $6,400. )

Gale Group Logo

Health & Wellness Resource Center with the Alternative Health Module: This resource center for consumer health from Thomson Gale includes additional content beyond what NOVEL provides in the Health Reference Academic resource. The Health & Wellness Resource Center includes additional general reference sources and alternative health magazines and journals. The cost for this online resource center is $50.00 per library. The full cost to the region is $25,000 with the subsidy paying $15,519 and the balance by the participating libraries. Without the leverage of the state-purchased NOVEL databases, the cost to the region for this resource would have been over $50,000. The subscription year is July 1st, 2004 to June 30th, 2005.
