Bard College Hosts SENYLRC's 37th Annual Meeting

Fisher Center for the Performing Arts

The architecturally beautiful Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College was the site of SENYLRC’s 37th Annual Meeting on Friday June 4. About 70 people from libraries of all types in the Southeastern region attended.

Judith McGrath, Board President, opened the meeting by welcoming the group and introducing her colleagues on the board. After the minutes of the 2003 Annual Meeting were approved, Board member Lynn Barley, Chair of the Trustee Nominating Committee, announced the results of the election of trustees to the board. Celia Seupel was newly elected representing the public community at large, replacing Elizabeth Bushy. Barbara Durniak and Jeff Katz, both representing the academic library community, were re-elected to a second five year term. Likewise, Judith McGrath, representing the special library community, was also re-elected.

Judith then recognized the efforts and commitment by departing board member Elizabeth Bushey. Liz served on the Board from 1998 to 2004 and on the Board’s Executive Committee as Assistant Secretary-Treasurer from 2001-2004.

Judith McGrath also recognized the chairs of SENYLRC’s various committees for their time and energies they expended for the advancement of SENYLRC’s programs and services:

  • Teresa Davis, Regional ILL Committee (Mount St. Mary College)
  • Dan Donohue, Technology Review and Advisory Committee (Dutchess BOCES School Library System)
  • John Barrie, Continuing Education Committee (Dominican College)
  • Ron Patkus, Digital Advisory Committee (Vassar College)
  • Twila Snead, Hospital Library Services Program Advisory Committee (St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital)
  • Mary Ann Van Benschoten, Electronic Resources Advisory Committee (Orange County Community College)

Judith then turned the meeting over to John Shaloiko, SENYLRC’s Executive Director. After introducing and recognizing SENYLRC’s staff, John formally expressed his gratitude to Judith McGrath who guided the board as its president over the last two years. John then presented his report on the Council. Titled “SENYLRC – Need to Refine Itself or Reinvent Itself?,” John quoted Gary Campbell, CEO of the Heart Center of Indiana about the six action steps to the reinvention of an organization. Focusing on the various phases of an organization’s life cycle, John made a parallel to SENYLRC’s life cycle, suggesting that, after 37 years, SENYLRC is most likely needing to enter into a re-invention phase. John reported on the accomplishment and milestones of the year past, the fiscal and programmatic challenges that are being faced by the Council, and the need for strategic planning in the new year that will lead to new opportunities. Following a mid-meeting break, the attendees were entertained by a musical performance of selections for cello and piano. Musicians Robert Martin, cellist, and artistic co-director of the Bard Music Festival and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bard College and Margaret Kampmeier, pianist, educator, and professor at Princeton University performed selections from Sergei Rachmaninoff and John Sebastian Bach.

After the musical performance the attendees walked a short distance to the beautiful Manor House Café for a hot buffet lunch. Later after lunch many of the attendees were treated to a guided tour of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.

SENYLRC would like to express its appreciation to the staff of the Stevenson Library at Bard College, and in particular library director Jeff Katz for all the behind the scene preparatory work they did to make this 37th Annual Meeting such a success.
