New York Library Assistants' Association (NYSLAA): Keeping up with Library Assistants'

Preparation is underway for the 27th Annual Conference to be held June 8-10, 2005 (“Smooth Sailing for the Future”) at the Ramada Inn-Geneva Lakefront in Geneva New York. The packets are in production as you are reading this. They will be mailed in February to the membership. Mark your calendars to attend this exciting and informative event. The conference is open to all with a member and non member rate. Information is also available off the website. Southeastern had the honor of hosting this conference in 1996 at the SUNY New Paltz Campus.

For those of you who haven’t heard of this association and haven’t yet joined, there is a very informative website <http://www.nyslaa.org/> that you can visit to learn about the officers, by-laws, history, annual awards, conferences, Library Assistants’ Day as well as other aspects of the association. You can download the membership application from this site. The cost for a yearly regular membership is $15.00 and for an associate membership is $12.00. There is also a link to sign up to the NYSLAA-L listserv. This is a great place to ask questions, get help or just keep up with the library news.

In 1999, NYLA (New York Library Association) endorsed the Certificate of Achievement Program that recognizes library assistants’ contribution to libraries and the library profession. This certificate is issued to acknowledge the education and skills the library assistant has acquired. The focus is on library workers that do not hold librarian positions. There are four levels and five areas of specialization. Follow the link off the website to learn more about this program and how to get the “The NYSLAA Certificate of Achievement Program Guidelines”.

If you haven’t already done so, visit the website, plan to attend the conference, become a member and network with other library assistants. NYSLAA is something to check-out.
