Library Spotlight on Nathan Kline Institute Health Sciences Library

If you need information on mental health or mental illness, the
Health Sciences Library of the Nathan Kline Institute (NKI) is a good place
to look. The NKI library offers a variety of psychiatric and medical information
resources in print and electronic formats. The library's primary mission is
to support the research efforts of the Institute's investigators. We also function
as the professional library for the clinical staff of the Rockland Psychiatric
Center and the Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center. Our collection is research-oriented,
and particularly strong in the areas of neuroscience, psychiatry, psychopharmacology,
and psychology. However, we are also proud to maintain a Family Resource Center,
which provides books and other materials for families and friends of those with
mental illness.
The NKI library is a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine,
and participates actively in several resource sharing systems: DOCLINE, OCLC,
and SEAL. In 2004, we broke our own record by delivering over 6,000 documents!
The library's journal holdings can be viewed in OCLC's WorldCat, as well as
via Southeastern's union list of serials. Our OPAC can also be searched via
SEAL.
The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research is an agency of the
New York State Office of Mental Health. The Institute is named after its founder,
Dr. Nathan S. Kline, who was a pioneer in the pharmacological treatment of mental
illness. Current research at NKI focuses primarily on schizophrenia and Alzheimer's
disease. To learn more about NKI and its programs, please visit http://www.rfmh.org/nki.
NKI is located in Orangeburg (Palisades Parkway, exit 6W), on the campus of
the Rockland Psychiatric Center. The library welcomes visitors from the public
on weekdays. Please call for an appointment if assistance from the librarian
is required.
